The Scarsdale Diet – A Quick way to Lose Weight Fast
The Scarsdale diet has been around for years, first published back in the 1960s it has helped millions lose a bit of weight fast, while being simple and easy to follow. The basic premise of this diet is much the same as the Atkins diet which followed the Scarsdale diet and allowed for a longer term weight loss and more options. Low in carbohydrates and fat and higher in protein this diet promised up to 20 pounds of weight loss in the 2 week period in which you were on it.
The Scarsdale diet is considered very restrictive as you are not allowed any substitutions whatsoever, as the premise that certain combinations of foods helped with the weight loss. There is a long list of items that you are not allowed to eat, such as any type of prepackaged salad dressings or mayonnaise. Potatoes are strictly off the menu as is any type of added fats. Alcoholic beverages and sugar, cream and milk are strictly forbidden on this diet as well.
The Scarsdale diet is based on eating a piece of toast and grapefruit every morning, then for lunch you are allowed lunch meat or tuna fish along with some vegetables such as celery or tomatoes. For dinner you are allowed some sort of meat such as steak, turkey, lean hamburger, or pork and a salad or vegetable of some type. Some days have a bit more variety in them and you may be able to eat an egg or some cottage cheese for lunch. Fruit is limited to the grapefruit and a fruit salad once or twice a week.
There are a number of people that are skeptical of this diet and the results it promises, which is a pound a day for two weeks. Most doctors will point out to you that the weight loss is mostly water weight and that you will simply gain the weight back when you are done with the diet since there is no adequate maintenance plan and even the doctor who devised this plan will tell you that you should not stay on it for more than two weeks at a time.
Despite that many people have used the Scarsdale diet and had considerable success in shedding a few unwanted pounds quickly when they needed to. If you have ten or 20 pounds of extra weight that you need to get rid of and not a lot of time this diet may be just the thing, just keep in mind that if you go back to your old way of eating after you are done, that you will gain all the weight back so be prepared to transition to some sort of maintenance plan to keep you fit and healthy.
