A Few Extra Pounds Linked to a Longer Life
It is possible that under certain circumstances, being a little overweight is good as opposed to bad,” says Steven B. Heymsfield, MD, executive director of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La. Heymsfield wrote an editorial on the review but was not involved in the research.
About 30% of women and 40% of men in the U.S. are overweight based on their body mass index (BMI), a measure of size that takes into account a person’s height and weight. While they may not be able to wear their favorite clothing size, Heymsfield says it doesn’t necessarily mean they are sicker than people who are at so-called normal BMIs.
“You have to separate out the cosmetic part from the health part,” he says.
The review, which is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, takes a fresh look at nearly two decades of research into the relationship between body weight and death risk. “We have a huge amount of data because we collected almost 100 studies,” says researcher Katherine Flegal, PhD, a distinguished consultant with the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics in Bethesda, Md.
People with BMIs under 30 but above normal were less likely to die during the studies compared to people with normal BMIs. A reduction in the risk of death from all causes was about 6% lower for people who were overweight, and it was remarkably consistent from study to study, Flegal says.
Those people considered obese based on BMI, however, were worse off. They were about 18% more likely to die of any cause compared to those of normal weights. To read more go here.
Carrying Extra Weight Linked To Living Longer: Our Thoughts?
Carrying Extra Weight Linked To Living Longer, I think most people after reading the headline of this article will naturally think, well if I’m heavier good I’ll live longer, well that’s not exactly true there’s a difference between being bigger than the average person but still been fit. You see I know many people who are carrying extra weight but are still extremely fit people, but most of the time people would look at them and say because there abdominal is not showing through and their pecks are not striated muscle fibres they must be out of shape.
The biggest misconception of to day is that you’re not in shape if you can’t see your abdominals and you don’t look like someone from one of the fitness magazines and we all know that’s not true. But on the other hand if you’re a couch potato and carrying extra weight well your health might be in trouble, because being overweight and not doing any kind of exercise is definitely a recipe for disaster.
I remember going for a medical, as the doctor asked me to remove my clothes I thought his mouth was going to hit his knees as I was in the best shape of my life 18 stone 4 pounds he looked at the scales and said do you know you are obese and i looked at his and he turned around and said i would love to look like you and be obese we both just laughed.
So be careful just because you may be big doesn’t mean you are fat. Carrying Extra Weight Linked To Living Longer.
